A malfunction in a prototype of a new fire extinguisher is what caused a 3 story building to burn to the ground in an industrial area of Kalamazoo Monday. Instead of spraying a chemical solution to extinguish flames, witnesses described that it turned into a flame thrower, spraying flames across the R&D lab, which caused the initial fire. "We never thought this would happen, not once," said Mr. Bell, the manager at the plant. He is currently facing charges for not training his staff to be competent with the types of fire extinguisher they use at the plant. Police also noted the lack of on hand fire extinguishers and sprinklers. Because of this, the fire soon spread to other parts of the building, causing workers to evacuate and abandon any plans to save the factory. The fire is a massive blow to the fire extinguisher industry, due to the plant being the biggest and main supplier in the surrounding area. The prices of a fire extinguisher has skyrocketed to over $100 a piece. To make up for the lack of extinguishers, businesses have started to import extinguishers from Canada and other surrounding states. It will be an estimated 5 years before the plant will be able to re-open.
